Jewish women’s group condemns House of Representatives’ vote to codify cruel Senate proposal, which cuts critical Medicaid and SNAP funding, threatens women’s health care, and attacks working families
WASHINGTON, DC — National Council of Jewish Women — one of the nation’s leading Jewish feminist civil rights organizations, representing 250,000 advocates from across the country — released the following statement condemning the House of Representatives’ passage of the Senate’s immoral reconciliation budget package, which guts critical health care and nutrition assistance programs to pay for tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy:
“Put simply, this final budget is a failure of our government’s moral obligation to lift families up, support women and children, and give working people a fair shot at success,” said Darcy Hirsh, senior director of government relations and advocacy. “Instead of building an America where every individual, child, and family can flourish, Congress has chosen to abandon them by ripping out the foundations from beneath their feet — particularly by slashing Medicaid, CHIP, and SNAP. This budget will also end access to reproductive health care for millions of women by defunding and shuttering clinics across the country — which are, for many, the sole source of cancer screenings, STI testing, and prenatal care in their area. Buried in a massive bill filled with sweeping cuts, this attack on reproductive health care is intentional — designed to pass unnoticed as just another line item.”
She continued: “If Congress was looking to hamstring our economy, balloon our deficit, and make life harder for the vast majority of Americans, they couldn’t have done a better job. Our Jewish values compel us to support the poor, the sick, and the stranger; this bill fails miserably on all accounts. We are called to action, and National Council of Jewish Women’s 250,000 advocates will not stop fighting in statehouses across the country and in Congress for everyone’s ability to access the programs and services they need to both survive and thrive.”
