WASHINGTON D.C. — Today, nearly three years since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, 13 organizations are launching Faithful Majority for Reproductive Freedom — the first national faith-based coalition focused on reproductive and religious freedom. This coalition brings together organizations and leaders across religious traditions and denominations to shift the narrative around faith and reproductive freedom.
For decades, anti-abortion extremists have dominated the faith-based conversation on abortion, promoting a false narrative that pits religion against reproductive freedom. This distortion has escalated a decades-long abortion care and maternal mortality crisis, fueled a wave of abortion bans that deny people the freedom to make their own personal decisions, and silenced the voices of the faithful majority who support abortion access. Now, Faithful Majority for Reproductive Freedom is organized to fight the weaponization of religion to ensure voices of faith are uplifted and centered in the struggle to ensure abortion access.
“Jewish tradition teaches us that every person deserves to live with dignity, compassion, and agency,” said Sheila Katz, CEO of National Council of Jewish Women. “That means trusting people to make their own reproductive health care decisions, guided by their values — not imposing one narrow Christian interpretation of religion on an entire nation. Our religious freedom and our reproductive freedom are inseparable. National Council of Jewish Women is proud to co-lead this new coalition alongside Catholics for Choice and SACReD to reclaim the moral narrative: people of faith believe in dignity, in compassion, and in the sacred right to bodily autonomy.”
As organizations representing diverse faith traditions, we are united in the shared values of compassion and dignity for all. We are committed to ensuring equity and justice for the most marginalized members of our society: low-income people, people of color, LGBTQI+ people, and more – the very people our faiths call us to serve first – who are disproportionately affected by abortion bans and restrictions. These bans on reproductive healthcare also deny people their First Amendment right to practice their own religion and be free from the religious beliefs of others.
“Majorities of nearly all religious groups – including Catholics – think abortion should be legal in all or most cases,” said Chris Wimbush, Interim President at Catholics for Choice. “As people of faith, we trust women and pregnant people to make their own conscience-informed decisions in consultation with their families, their doctors, and their communities. A politician’s personal religious views shouldn’t be a forced factor in our laws or decision-making. We started this coalition because we know that ignoring pro-choice faith-based voices in the fight for reproductive freedom is a losing strategy. We are here to call attention to the faithful majority.”
Through shared resources and coordinated advocacy, the coalition will support faith-based organizations, leaders, and individuals to speak out and act for reproductive freedom.
“People of faith across many traditions are coming together to reject the shame and judgment of anti-abortion extremists, and instead lead with our religious values of compassion, justice, and love,” said Rev. Angela Tyler-Williams, Co-Executive Director at SACReD (Spiritual Alliance of Communities for Reproductive Dignity). “We’re shifting the culture to make religious and reproductive freedom a lived reality for all. Everyone has the right to make decisions guided by their own beliefs and values — not the distorted political agenda of white Christian nationalists.”
